Examination paper - Annotated Bibliography Example The dread and bias against Muslim has prompted an assault on all Muslims, including consuming the mosques. The Muslims see this as scorn towards an alternate shading or an alternate religion. Towards the end of the Ramadan, a mosque was brought down to thunders in Missouri (Amer and Basu, 2012). Hence, there is an Islamophobia, which doesn't really separate among fear based oppressors and Muslims, or the Muslim religion. In New York, an understudy assaulted and cut a taxi driver who was a Muslim, bringing up the issue of whether this demonstration was activated by the culprits abhor for Muslims or it was only a criminal demonstration focusing at any taxi driver (Crudele and Esposito, 2012). The New York city hall leader named the occurrence shocking, in the midst of the vulnerability of what precisely had set off this activity. On the off chance that such an activity was activated by such disdain, at that point it is obvious that the partiality against the Muslims is going to lethal l evel. The commemoration on the September 2011 assaults in America has consistently made dim recollections, lighting a sentiment of hatred between the Americans and the Muslims. This could be the conceivable trigger of the ongoing assaults on the Muslim confidence, set apart by illegal conflagrationists and against Sharia developments (Lean, 2012). There has been a supported demeanor of despise towards the Muslims, which is an off-base reaction to the misfortunes endured during the 2001 assault. Platos Poesis In Republic Essays - Platonism, Dialogues Of Plato

Plato's Poesis In Republic Essays - Platonism, Dialogs Of Plato Plato's Poesis In Republic Plato's three primary issues with verse are that verse isn't moral, philosophical or down to earth. It isn't moral since it advances bothersome interests, it isn't philosophical on the grounds that it doesn't give genuine information, and it isn't realistic in light of the fact that it is second rate compared to the reasonable expressions and in this way has no instructive worth. Plato at that point makes a test to artists to safeguard themselves against his reactions. Incidentally it was Plato's most acclaimed understudy, Aristotle, who was the principal scholar to protect writing and verse in his composing Poetics. All through the Republic Plato censures craftsmanship in all structures including writing or verse. Notwithstanding the way that he composed, Plato advocates the expressed word over the composed word. He positions impersonation (mimetic portrayal) on a lower plane than story, despite the fact that his own works read like contents (the Republic is written in exchange structure with characters doing all the talking). It seems like his thinking is that impersonation of the truth isn't in itself awful, yet impersonation without comprehension and reason is. Plato felt that verse, similar to all types of craftsmanship, claims to the substandard piece of the spirit, the unreasonable, enthusiastic weak part. The peruser of verse is lured into feeling unwanted feelings. To Plato, a valuation for verse is contrary with an energy about explanation, equity, and the quest for Truth. To him dramatization is the most perilous type of writing in light of the fact that the writer is copying things th at he/she isn't. Plato apparently feels that no words are sufficiently able to denounce show. Plato felt that all the world's disasters got from one source: a broken comprehension of the real world. Miscommunication, disarray and numbness were aspects of a ruined understanding of what Plato consistently strived for - Truth. Plato is, most importantly, a moralist. His essential target in the Republic is to concocted the most exemplary, smart approach to carry on with one's life and to persuade others to live along these lines. Everything else ought to adjust so as to accomplish this ideal State. Plato considers verse valuable just as a methods for accomplishing this State, is, just helpful in the event that it encourages one to improve as an individual, and in the event that it doesn't, it ought to be ousted from the network. Plato's inquiry in Book X is the scholarly status of writing. He expresses that, the great artist can't create well except if he knows his subject, and he who has not this information can never be a poet(Adams 33). Plato says of imitative verse and Homer, A man isn't to be reverenced more than reality (Adams 31). Plato says this since he accepts that Homer talks about numerous things of which he has no information, similarly as the painter who portrays a bed doesn't really have a clue how to make a bed. His point is that so as to duplicate or copy effectively, one must know about the first. Plato says that impersonation is three degrees expelled from reality. Stories that are false have no worth, as no false story ought to be told in the City. He expresses that nothing can be gained from imitative verse. Plato's discourse on verse in Republic is overwhelmingly negative. In books II and III Plato's fundamental worry about verse is that kids' brains are too receptive to even consider being perusing bogus stories and distortions of reality. As expressed in book II, For a youngster can't judge what is metaphorical and what is exacting; whatever he gets into his brain at that age is probably going to get permanent and unalterable; and in this way it is most significant that the stories which the youthful first hear ought to be models of ethical idea (Adams 19). He is basically saying that youngsters can't differentiate among fiction and reality and this trade offs their capacity to observe directly from wrong. Along these lines, youngsters ought not be presented to verse so sometime down the road they will have the option to look for the Truth without having a biased, or distorted, perspective on the real world. Plato reasons that writing that depicts the divine beings as carrying on in i mproper manners ought to be avoided kids, with the goal that they won't be impacted to act a similar way.

Voting in America free essay sample

The numbers are in. All Americans reserve the privilege to cast a ballot, when they turn the age of eighteen then each and every one of them can cast a ballot. On the off chance that youre dazzle there is brail, if you’re hard of hearing the races are done on the PC so you can understand it. You dont must have a particular measure of cash or own a specific measure of land, people can cast a ballot and all races can cast a ballot. However still scarcely 50% of every qualified voter appear and cast a voting form at every political race. The number rises when presidential races come around yet it despite everything has neither rhyme nor reason. People yielded their lives for us to have the option to remove a couple of moments from our day and vote. We, the individuals get the opportunity to have a state in our administration. Outside nations would actually execute for an opportunity like that but numerous Americans exploit their privileges. We will compose a custom paper test on Casting a ballot in America or on the other hand any comparable subject explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page What bothers me the most is individuals will decide not to proceed to cast a ballot but then they despite everything need to grumble about how our administration is run. From the moment, that our incredible legends in history like Thomas Jefferson plunked down and thought of an administration they incorporated the individuals completely and ensured the privilege was there to cast a ballot. It took somewhat longer to start deciding in favor of all genders and races however it was a fight we won. By what method can we not value something we buckled down for? The subject of this paper is to tell in the case of casting a ballot ought to be required for every single individual. It would be so natural for me to respond to yes to that question; in any case, doing that would abuse our unalienable privileges of the constitution. Everybody in America has opportunity that can't be removed. Compelling individuals to cast a ballot would make us look deceptive to the various remote nations. I accept that despite the fact that we ought not constrain every person to cast a ballot we ought to advance democratic much more. Individuals will in the end acknowledge how much democratic really intends to the legislature, and exactly how much their one vote can change the man who drives our nation, or the pace of expenses, or who is chosen onto their childs educational committee. I likewise accept we have to advance all decisions not simply the presidential one. Choosing the president is a significant political decision yet individuals additionally need to understand that the individuals chose on their educational committee will make rules for their youngsters, the assessments decided on will influence them, and while choosing a representative they will require one to work with them. In the event that individuals genuinely knew the amount of an effect the other democratic had I accept the democratic rate would go up recognizably.

Intestate Succession Act Business Law

Question: Talk about the Intestate Succession Act for Business Law. Answer: 1. Appropriation of Residuary Estate A residuary condition is a provision that passes on property that is left by the expired. The provision is contained in a will and might be available in a will after all the property has been handed down to the legitimate recipients in the will and what is remaining isn't explicitly arranged by the given will, is what is accommodated in the proviso. The property that is being passed on in a residuary proviso is generally alluded to as the residuary home. The perished, Mr. Alvin, has passed on yet has not left any enduring companion and thusly rule 2 of area 7 Intestate Succession Act( 1967) won't have any significant bearing. In any case, it is enthusiasm to take note of that there are two enduring god kids that have been left and subsequently Rule 3 of the demonstration will apply here where the bequest of the expires that isn't circulated in this sense will be isolated in equivalent measure between the kids and the some other lawful delegates of the kids. The wording of area 7 standard 3 has plainly characterized the legitimate delegates of the kids as their relatives and dismissed any closest relatives. It ought to likewise be noticed that the god kids however are not the organic offspring of the perished, they have been coverd by law as offspring of the expired inside the meaning of segment 3 of the Intestate Succession Act ( 1967). The legitimate represeantives that have been alluded to for this situation incorporate Elvin Tan, Jim Tan and David Tan who will likewise have an equivalent offer in the remaining property of the perished. Anyway it has been noted in the realities of the case that Elvin has died and has been left with an enduring life partner and two youngsters Fin and Han. For this situation Rule 2 area 7 of the Intestate Succession Act will apply and the spouse to Elvin will be qualified for half of the leftover offer that should have been given to Elvin by temperance of Rule 3 of the Act and the other half will be to the kids. It is of specific essentialness to take note of that Han and Fin are minors since Han is five years of age and Fin is seven years of age. As rule three has noticed, the kids will be spoken to by their quick lawful agent who for this situation will be the mother of the youngsters. Jim tan and David Tan are the main enduring kin and relative of Alvin. As has been noted above Jim and tan will be qualified for the residuary domain however they will each take an equivalent elixir. Basically, the leftover home will be isolated among four individuals. The two god kids that have been left by the perished and the 3 kin left by Alvin anyway the offer that is to go to the expired kin will be given to the family as indicated by the principles clarified previously. 2. Sorts of inheritances in proviso 2 and 3 The sort inheritances have been expansively talked about on account of Celantano Estate v Ross (2014) and the principles that have been built up will be applied in the conversation hereunder. Statement 2 The sort of inheritance that is in proviso to can be portrayed as a definite heritage as it will confirm underneath. A decisive heritage has been said to contain both of the e components of a general inheritance and a particular heritage. At the end of the day it is viewed as a particular heritage since its wording determines the specific or rather the particular sum or thing that will be given to a specific explicit individual referenced by the expired. Anyway what makes it somewhat a general heritage is the way that the predefined measure of cash can be brought from the general leftover sum that has been left by the expired. An illustrative inheritance has been shown on account of Wood Estate v. Arlotti-Wood (2004) in section 12 of woods state where the condition expressed that I give [pounds] 100 to be raised out of the offer of my Surrey properties. For this situation the proviso 2, since it is explicit with respect to the sum which is $5000 it very well may be contended that it is an expressive heritage. The condition will likewise have the option to produce results in light of the fact that the aggregate of cash may originate from any of the piece of the perished bequest. Proviso 3 A particular heritage is that is explicitly makes reference to in the will from which part of the home the cash or some other thing will be found from (Halsburys Laws of England 1998). The inheritance in provision three which was to Simon Temper the godson of the perished can been supposed to be a particular heritage on the grounds that the measure of cash that was gave was indicated structure a specific explicit piece of the expired home which is OCBC Bank account number 485772. It very well may be recognized from the above illustrative heritage by the way that in the definite inheritance there has been no particular notice of which financial balance or part of the home of the expired the cash to be given to his companions will originate from. The main recognizable financial balance for this situation is DBS Bank Account. Due to occurrences, for example, this the courts have consistently avoided deciding that a specific provision uncertainties explicit except if the condition is cle arly one and has been explicitly satiated in the will in clear words that it is explicit as was noted on account of Smith Estate (Re) (2003). The courts have likewise chosen in Re Culbertson that the strict and standard importance ought to be understood out of the wording in the condition to figure out which kind of inheritance the proviso could be suggesting. At the point when proviso 3 is deciphered in its strict significance it can clearly be perceived that it is a particular heritage. It tends to be seen from the realities of the case that Late Mr. Ivan had no any ledger with OCBC financial balance and thusly the inheritance won't have the option to produce results. 3. An award of letters of organization with will attached (cum confirmation added ) is typically given where the agent of the property of the expired isn't there to manage the property of the perished .The agent may not be available in light of the fact that they likewise kicked the bucket after the will was made. What's more the award of the letter of organization with will added is regularly made where the perished kicked the bucket testate and there was a substantial will and yet there is likewise a remaining property of the expired that has not been doubted in the will. Basically the perished is held to have passed on mostly testate and incompletely intestate that is the reason the will is joined precisely award of organization. Regularly when an individual bites the dust testate having abandoned a will the kind of award of portrayal that will be caused will to be the award of probate. For our situation in point it tends to be seen that the individuals who were delegated as agents of the will for this situation have passed on. Moreover, it has likewise been noticed that the home of Late Mr. Alvin has not been totally passed on as there is a remaining home that has been. It along these lines follows that the suitable award of portrayal for this situation will be the award of letters of organization with will added. Since all the agent have passed on for this situation the standard that explains who will have the option to apply for the award will be relevant compliant with Probate and Administration Act(Chapter 251). The demonstrations in segment 13 provides the request for need on who will have the option to apply for the award of letter of organization with the will attached. Concurring the request given is segment 13 the residuary legatee of any widespread legatee that has ben accommodated in the will is qualified for apply for the award of the letters of organization with the will added. For this situation the goddaughter of the perished is a lingering legatee being a lawful offspring of the expired and having been given in rule 3 of segment 7 Intestate Succession Act ( 1967), she can apply for the letters of organization on the off chance that she achieves the age of 18. Moreover, the two siblings that have been left by the perished who are the natural siblings are additionally inside the meaning of remaining legatees as gave fro in the previously mentioned segment, and they may likewise apply fro the letters of organization with the will added. The application for the award must indicate that the candidates are of the imperative mental limit inside the meaning of Mental Capacity Act (Cap. 177) (Subordinate Courts of the Republic of Singapore Practice Directions Amendment No. 1 of 2012). It ought to likewise be borne at the top of the priority list that by dint of area 55(1) of the Probate Act the where no application for the award has been made inside a half year the letters of organization with the will added might be allowed to the open trustee by the court (Chiang Shirley v Chiang Dong Pheng 2015). 4. The god little girl for this situation has been granted $5000 given that she arrives at 18 years of age. It very well may be seen that there is a predetermined measure of cash that has been granted for this situation despite the fact that the particular wellspring of the cash from the bequest of the perished has not been determined. By applying the decision that was oversee on account of Re Culbertson (1967) that the wording of a provision ought to be given a customary plain significance. It very well may be reasoned that the provision isn't a determine inheritance in the exacting sense since it doesn't indicate the wellspring of the bequest that the measure of cash ought to be taken from. Nonetheless, it could be viewed as a general inheritance in light of the fact that the measure of cash that will be paid may originate from any wellspring of the deceaseds bequest. Basically, in view of the way that the heritage is torn in the middle of the general inheritance and the extraordinary heritage, it very well may be yielded that the sort heritage for this situation is he decisive heritage. The inheritance will produce results in light of the fact that the measure of cash can be brought from a wide wellspring of the home of the perished yet just with the condition that until she achieves the age of 18 years. Argumentative Essay Essay

Each body adores the triple bacon cheeseburger from Wendy’s, additional bacon. Or then again the fresh out of the box new Iphone that has recently been discharged and you out of nowhere feel that overwhelming want to grasp it. America is tied in with living for overabundance. Individuals live for what is effectively available regardless of the expense. In perusing of a Buy Nothing Day actualized and forced on Canada, to expand the familiarity with over the top commercialization, we should ask would this be valuable to the United States? I should concur that it is helpful to some in bringing issues to light. In spite of the fact that I concur, I should likewise unequivocally discredit the possibility of a â€Å"Buy Nothing Day† because of the low investment among our general public in America, and the trouble in ensnared such a day. To begin with, I concur with the possibility that our country could utilize a â€Å"Buy Nothing Day† and it could be exceptionally valuable in raising the attention to our unreasonable devouring. Having the chance to head out to a poverished nation myself, I have ended up with an expanding attention to my industrialism. I particularly recollect leaving the â€Å"Barra Payan† sandwich shop with a smile all over, eager to eat up the sandwich I had spent close to 3 dollars on. As I kept on exiting, a little fellow moved toward me, and in his messed up English inquired as to whether I would give him only a nibble of my sandwich. He had no shoes on, a shirt that had been worn to the creases and bathing suit implied for a baby, however he dealt with an abnormal little grin as he inquired. The trash all over was famous however, and he faltered my heart. Heedlessly, I went before to give him my whole sandwich. Embracing me, he ran off eat up the sandwich I had quite recently purchased. Being down in the Dominican Republic for seven days, I got myself mindful of my broad industrialism I show on an everyday premise, while individuals can scarcely have enough food to endure. Despite the fact that having a solitary day in America may not be to this outrageous, I unequivocally feel that it would be a significant method of helping raising the familiarity with this issue in America today. In spite of the fact that on one hand I feel it would be a positive plan to set up a yearly â€Å"Buy Nothing Day†, I should refute its possibility. With no guarantees, America is only country living for abundance and straightforwardness. Regardless of where we drive, or any place we may go, there is that implied decide that you should focus on the best. I am certain you have had that important experience of driving by the cherry red Ferrari and with a little desire you jealousy to have that vehicle. Or on the other hand you go into Five Guys to get a burger and you see the person before you request each garnish on his burger. So you state to hellfire with it, I am doing what I need, and every one of those garnishes will be on my burger. I have seen this on many occasions. In a country where we waste endless hours shopping and motivation purchasing, it is extremely unlikely an immense measure of individuals would take an interest in a day, for example, purposed. With that expressed, I should unequivocally invalidate the possibility of a yearly â€Å"Buy Nothing Day†, essentially because of its reality is nothing our way of life is familiar with. Correspondingly, we as Americans are very extremist and would not coordinate such a day. Thus, I should discredit incorporating a day, for example, this because of how buyer subordinate our general public is. You can scarcely travel a mile nowadays without seeing something you can purchase. I live in a town by the name of Castle Rock Colorado, and in our town we have a Home Depot, and a Lowes only a mile not far off. Why our town needs two home improvement stores is past me. Perhaps it is the fruition between each organization, or conceivable which has more inventories. This is a great case of what our way of life is here in America. Same goes for service stations. There is one convergence with 3 corner stores. The entirety of which, attempting to tempt you with marginally lower gas costs, or the world’s best determination of lousy nourishment. Rivalry is the thing that drives our economy and in pushing to attempt to urge a day to not accepting anything, totally debases the possibility of our virtues as Americans whether I concur with them or not. Since our general public uniquely runs for the most part on enormous business, the possibility of this day lifts up the things we hold so beyond a reasonable doubt as Americans. Nearby this, the first run through attempting to execute such a day is close to outlandish, and would be demanding to all individuals who live in America. In looking profoundly into forcing a â€Å"Buy Nothing Day† in America, I firmly concur with the way that for some it might raise some mindfulness briefly. Despite the fact that I concur, I should likewise nullify the execution of this day since it is difficult to pick up cooperation just as the demanding assignments of trouble in incorporating a day, for example, this because of how shopper subordinate our general public is.

Networking COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog

Networking COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog One buzz word you’re likely to hear a lot during your time at SIPA is “networking.”   We talk about the power of networking and its importance all the time, but even the most experienced SIPA student can feel intimidated at the prospect. Networking like any other skill, improves with practice and the better you get, the more comfortable youll feel using it. Here are some tips to exercise your networking muscle: Network Before You Need It.  Networking is not about using people, its about fully participating in your professional community. One of the great joys of my professional experience has been connecting people. A former intern wants to go to intern and the state department and I happen to know a SIPA grad who works there. A classmate wants to work for the Sierra Club and I attended a training session with someone who works there. Not only have I helped my colleagues find jobs or staff, but I know that there are competent people working for the causes in which I believe. By building a network before you need it, you enable yourself to help shape your professional community and people are more than happy to return the favor when the time comes. (And youll feel better about asking). Value Yourself and Your Experience. You have every right to reach out to your colleagues and people youve done good work for.  Put yourself in the other persons shoes. If a friend of a classmate wanted to pick your brain for advice or you were in a position to forward your former interns resume, wouldnt you be happy to help?  Why shouldnt you expect the same professional courtesy?   Public policy people tend to be especially giving in this capacity because we understand what it takes to be a committed and effective advocate and we want to promote those traits. Assuming youve done good work in the past, there is no reason for them not to help you unless a) they are insanely busy b) they are being a jerk or c) they dont feel youll use their time wisely (see below). Ask For Advice.  People like when you ask for their advice. It makes them feel admired and important. (Hello, advice column I am in the midst of writing.)  Asking career advice is a great way to get useful information and establish a relationship at little cost to the advisor. Good questions to ask include, Who should I be talking to? and If I want x job eventually what kind of experience do I need?  Asking these questions is a useful exercise in and of itself.  You should only ask questions to which you genuinely want the answer. That said, you may find that your questions are rewarded with an offer to help. If not, once youve established a relationship you can follow up with Thats a great idea, do you know anyone there? Would you mind forwarding my resume? etc. Do your homework.  I will let you in on a little secret, it drives me CRAZY when people email or message me asking questions that I have already answered on my blog.  Likewise, when they ask me questions that could be answered by Google. Dont get me wrong, it is my absolute privilege to be a resource to my professional community, but as such I get a lot of requests for help or advice and I expect my time to be respected. Value the time and energy of your prospective sponsor or mentor. Dont ask questions you could have figured out on your own. Dont go on an informational interview without having done a little research on your interviewee or their company and Follow up.  Just like it takes time to give advice, it takes time to do a favor. If I offer to look over or forward your resume, dont take a week to send it to me.  If I respond to your email by offering advice, follow up thanking me. If you dont, not only will I feel disrespected, I will doubt your professionalism and therefore be disinclined to link my name with yours. The way you treat someone after they do you a favor impacts the likelihood that theyll do you one again. I hope this helps get you thinking about ‘networking’.    Remember, you are worth it! Be respectful and Im sure others will be more than happy to help!   Happy Hunting,

5 Must-Watch College Movies

Before I head off to college next year, I’m going to get in the right mood by watching some entertaining, college-themed movies. Join me and check out my favorite picks below! 22 Jump Street If you liked 21 Jump Street, you’ll absolutely LOVE 22 Jump Street. Surprisingly, I think this sequel is actually better than the first movie, a rare occurrence. Yet again, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill make a hilarious duo, this time as undercover cops trying to break up a college drug ring. Good Will Hunting Taking place on MIT’s campus, Good Will Hunting stars Matt Damon and Robin Williams, who won an Oscar for his supporting role. While not hilarious like 22 Jump Street, this touching drama really makes you think. Legally Blonde In this fun comedy, Elle Woods attends Harvard Law School, proving her smarts against all who underestimate her. The moral: believe in yourself and don’t listen to those who doubt you. Admission This movie will be interesting for all you juniors and seniors going through the college admissions process, as it shows the point of view of an admissions officer at Princeton. It’s hard to tell how realistic the film is, but it’s entertaining nevertheless. It’s like a behind the scenes look at how your application is evaluated. Monsters University Even though we’re not little kids anymore, a good animated movie is always fun now and then. I found Monsters University very cute and entertaining.

It draws information from various financial models developed earlier as revenue, expenses, capital, and cost of goods. By combining these factors, business results shows just how much your company makes or loses during the year by subtracting cost of goods and expenses from revenue to arrive at an outcome together, which is a profit or loss. In addition to the earnings report, including analysis of the results noted. Analysis should be very short, emphasizing the main points of the income statement. Cash flow stat ement is one of the most important information tools for businesses, because it shows how much money the business will need to meet obligations, when it will be required and where but it will come from. As a result, the profits will loss at the end of each month and year. Cash flow statement brings both profit and loss transfer to the next month also shows the cumulative amount. Running a loss on the cash flow statement is a big red flag that there is not enough cash to meet the costs-something that requires attention and immediate action. Cash flow statement should be prepared on a monthly basis in the first year, quarterly for the second year, and every year for the third year. As with the income statement, this will now need to analyze the cash flow statement in a short summary of the business plan. With the analysis is not only long and should include the highlights. The final financial report is a balance sheet. Unlike the previous financial statements, balance sheets are generated every year for a business plan and are, more or less, a summary of all the information prior fiscal divided into three domains Location: assets, liabilities and equity. Balance sheets are used to calculate the value of the assets of a business, individual by measuring assets against liabilities. If the business plan is an existing business, balance sheets from the last reporting period of the business should be included. If the business plan is a new business, trying to project the assets and liabilities of this business will end up planning process to determine which business owners can now accumulate in business. Received funding for a new business, the business will need to include personal financial statements or balance sheets. In the business plan, creating need to analyze the balance sheet as well as the need for business to make the income statement and cash flow. Analysis of the balance sheet should be cut short and include key points. Timeline Timeline of a project or plan is a clearly time defined in a project or a program has been set up according to a predetermined plan. Timeline will be determined depending on the nature and objectives of the plan which aims to plan, if the timeline is inaccurate or not done is set the time over, which can lead to deviations in the results to be achieved or create other consequences. Timeline will be set when the business plan was given; although this is short or long term of time, it will be determined by predicting the working process of how to achieve the goal. When implementing the plan need to pay attention to the timeline and ensure the implementation process must be completed before the timeline. Purpose of timeline for the implementation is to try to urge the plan must be carried out and completed in accordance with the target set. Poetic Influences Of Emily Dickinson s Poetry - 1775 Words

Biography Poetic Influences Emily Dickinson was an American poetess during the 19th century, born in Amherst, Massachusetts, December 10, 1830. Dickinson died at the age of 56, on May 15, 1886. Although her family was prominent, she was most unsociable, being intensely solitary. People considered her as an eccentric, as she showed disinclination towards guests, which in some cases, even caused them to leave, leaving most of her acquaintanceships founded upon by correlation. Dickinson was known for her adherence for wearing white clothing, and her introverted personality. She remained unwedded for life, and rarely ever left her front gate of her homestead. Emily Dickinson started writing poetry in her youthful years, and was encouraged by Benjamin Franklin Newton to continue her writings. During her teenage years, she had uncovered poetic works through verses of Ralph Waldo Emerson and William Wordsworth, she also deeply admired by John Keats and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Her poetry was deeply affected by the Book of Revelation, and her Puritan background, that influenced her to explore concepts like love and death, and write in styles that made her be noticeable to the crowd. Critics believe that her biggest influence in poetry was Reverend Charles Wadsworth, whom she had met on her trip to Philadelphia, and fell in love with him. 1. Spring and Neap Tides Spring vs. Neap Tides Spring tides occur when the Earth, Sun and the Moon are all about in the same line. We will write a custom essay sample on Coasts Revision Notes – AQA Geography or any similar topic only for you Order Now This causes the highest tidal range due to the strongest gravitational pulls with the high tides being the largest and the low tides being the smallest. Neap tides occur when the Earth, Sun and Moon are at 90 degrees which causes the gravitational pull to be less effective. This produces the lowest tidal range of tides. 1. Coastal Transport Long shore drift transports material along the coast. In the UK, the prevailing wind blows from the South West causing the waves to approach the southern coast at an angle of 45 degrees. Therefore material moves from the west to the east. The swash of the wave carries the material up to the beach at this angle. The bed load is moved along by rolling by traction however pebbles are lifted and bounced along the floor in a leap frog action – this is saltation. Lighter material is carried by suspension (such as grains of sand) and weak acids (e.g. carbonic acid from precipitation) may act on soluble rocks (carbonate rocks e.g. limestone) and move the material in solution. The backwash carries the material at 90 degrees- causing a zig-zag motion. Groynes may be in place to reduce this – however they can be expensive (around  £5,000 per groyne and are unasthecially pleasing) yet they do trap the sand. 1. Headland Formation Headland formation occurs when the bands rock type run perpendicular to the coast – this is known as a discordant coastline. The coast has alternating bands of resistant (hard) and less resistant (soft) rock – these types of rocks erode at different rates. The less resistant rock are eroded at a faster rate (through the processes of hydraulic action, abrasion and corrosion) and the more resistant rock erodes at a slower rate and protrudes out into the sea. Wave Refraction Now the headland is protruding out into the sea, this receives high energy waves. When the waves hit the coastline, they are refracted and they tend to ‘bend’ round the headland, into lower energy waves. These waves then deposit sediment and beaches eventually build up. Case Study: Purbeck coast, Dorset. The Eastern side is discordant. Headland – The foreland Purbeck Coast, Dorest. Geology – Chalk (made millions of years ago from Coccoliths). This headland is 1.3km wide. Bay – Swanage Bay made from Wealden Purbeck bed clays. This bay is 2.5 km wide. 1. Causes of cliff collapse Coastal Reasons * When waves head towards the coastline and the sea gets shallower, friction in the bed slows the bottom of the waves and make them more elliptical. The crest of the wave rises and then it collapses. * Destructive waves are high frequency, and are high and deep. They are around 10-14 waves per minute and their strong backwash removes material. * The waves break at the base of the cliff where the wave energy is concentrated. * This part of the cliff experiences rapid erosion thorough – abrasion, where material carried by the waves (eg rocks) are hurled against it. Also, H.A where the pressure of the air in the cracks from the water compress and release which erodes it. * This forms a wave cut notch * Over time, under the force of gravity, the mass above the wave cut notch cannot hold and collapses. * This processes of collapsing continues and the cliff retreats back. * This then leaves behind a wave cut platform that is no more than 5 degrees at the Low Water Mark. * As the platform gets longer, the waves have to reach further and many dissipate reducing the rate of erosion. * Sub Arial processes erode the platform such as paddock and seaweed. * Case Study: Broad bench Dorset, cliff is mixture of clay and shale (headlands made of Portland stone). Extension is 200m of platform, height of cliff is 20 m. Part of Jurassic coast – world heritage site. Sub-Arial * Not directly linked to sea, but from land * Freeze Thaw – When the diurnal range is around 0 dregrees – Scottish Highlands – Water expands by around 9%. Fluccutations in pressure fragments of rock may break off. * Biological – Rabbits may burrow into the cliff and piddocks may also weaken the rock which may remove some of the rock. * Chemical weathering, CO2 found in rainwater may form carbonic acid when it rains – attacks the calcium carbonate such as in limestone. Mass Movement * Slumping – Rainfall infiltrates the soil, making it heaver. * The material moves downhill, leaving a exposed scarp face * Case Study – Holbeck Hall, Scarborough. * 1993 – dry weather cracked the clay. This made the rock impermeable due to hot dry conditions * Next two months 140mm of rain fell (prolonged rainfall) * This then therefore infiltrated the soft rock above, but lubricated the clay. * On 3rd of June – the land was slipping into sea at 3m per hour. Collapse of hotel. Rest of hotel had to be demolished and they owners sued the authority ‘breach of its duty and care’. How to cite Coasts Revision Notes – AQA Geography, Papers

My Journey to America Essay Example For Students

My Journey to America Essay â€Å"Wow, here I am! I finally made it to Los Angeles! †, I thought to myself. As we made our way through the airport customs checkpoint, the officer had let my husband go through, but stopped me for further inspection. I was extremely nervous and worried what if they denied my entry. Eventually, the officer approved for me to pass; however, I had lost sight of my husband. I ran around the baggage claim area to search for him, still I couldnt locate him. I sat down in the corner, looked all over the place and asked myself, â€Å"What am I doing here? Unexpectedly, I felt the floor was shaking and got stronger in every second. I suddenly opened my eyes and realized that I just had a nightmare. It was an early morning that I woke up with the sun ray shining on my face and the sound of birds singing their usual wake- up songs. My dog was barking as if she was chatting to one another, and I could smell the foods in the kitchen where my mom was making delicious breakfasts for the family. However, this was not going to be the same anymore! Of course, I was extremely happy. When I was young, the thought of going to the Americas excited me, but moving away from my country where I grew up in and leaving my family whom I love the most behind was tough. ?Finally the time for me to pack up and leave for the airport had come. My parents were in the taxi with me, as well as my husband, my aunt, my sister, and my cousin, but only my best friend- my dog- was left behind inside of my house. All my life, I had been with them. I started to get emotional and feel like I was going to leave my home- forever, though I was also curious about a new life with my husband in a totally unfamiliar country. As the taxi parked in front of the airport, I couldnt believe that the moment came. The moment when I would have to exit out the taxi, head towards the terminal and say my final goodbyes. A lot of tears were shed many hugs were given. At the same time, I was grateful for my husband being there with me and giving me all kinds of support, much needed one at that moment. ?We began our long but yet new journey to the U. S. I had never travelled in an airplane before that made the trip more interesting. For a moment, my sorrow seemed to fade away through the enthusiasm. When I boarded my first international flight, I was inspired. I was on a giant airplane and me being an airplane fanatic. When the airplane was about to take off, I was very eager with excitement at the same time. Then as I turned my head to my right towards the window witnessing the sun was about to set the whole skyline of Vietnam suddenly appeared in front my eyes – the sight was mesmerizing. ?After a two-hour flight, we transited into Philippines airport. Everything appeared to be so different to me. We rushed to the first port of entry to clear customs. I passed easily, but my husband did not. They requested him to take out the umbrella- a beautiful sentimental gift from my mom- I had it since I was a little girl, but for them, it looked like a harmful weapon. Since we couldnt do anything, I disappointedly threw it in a trash bin. The feeling of guilt and sadness eroded in me when I looked back at it as though I had abandoned it there. By the time we were done, my husband and I were all exhausted and sleepy. We decided to take a nap before taking another flight. ? About an hour later, we packed up and caught a long flight to Los Angeles. .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b , .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b .postImageUrl , .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b , .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b:hover , .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b:visited , .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b:active { border:0!important; } .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b:active , .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ucaf9662e08a4265c7f69ffddbe9cd21b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) Was A Son Of A Minister In Switzerland. H EssayAs we all settled in the airplane completely, a passenger came and sat down next to me with a lovely smile. An old woman dressing comfortably with a pleasant appearance was about my grandmother’s age. Quickly, I had a feeling of comfort and security. She, then, pulled out her bible and began to mumble as if she was praying for this flight to make it safely to its final destination. When we were half way to the endpoint, I felt like it was never going to end. Finally after a long journey, we landed in Los Angeles. A majority of people in the plane gave a round of applause and screamed out loud â€Å"we made it. There was a sigh of relief in my mind, â€Å"Im glad were still alive,† I said to my husband. I couldnt wait any longer to get out of the airport and go home. ?My heart was filled with joy when I was standing in front of the house waiting for my husband to unload our luggages. I glanced at outside of the house, dark and quiet. Before we could reach for the door, it was slowly opening. I hurriedly leaned my head forward into the house a sudden wildly noise from a crowd screaming, â€Å"welcome home! , before I could see anything.

Camouflage With The Rebels Essay Example For Students

Camouflage With The Rebels Essay Bang, bang! Gunshots were fired into the open sky, or so I thought. I wondered if that shot was meant for anyone in particular or was it just because Ramadhan was fast approaching. Nevertheless, I continued on eating at the rooftop of my Lolas house. Here in Marawi, you learn to live life with striking beliefs and you adapt to their culture. A gunshot could mean many things; it could either be that there is a rido family feud or a festive celebration of some kind. When I first encountered such peculiar tradition, I panicked, shouted, cried and hid behind closed doors and cemented walls. I was afraid of flying bullets. But to my dismay, everyone around me just rejoiced and laughed. Ramadhan was a few hours away, and many show their extreme excitement through the triggering of such firearms. I learned to live with it eventually, until now that is. Weird yet strikingly true. As a student of Mindanao State University MSU, I have intellectually accepted their way of life and way of thinking. Being raised in different parts of the Arabian world, I was not used to witnessing such scenarios. I am proudly a Maranao myself, but these beliefs I was never aware of until now. One time, a man was killed two houses from ours. He laid there like an abandoned dead cat. Only after a few hours did people gathered around him, created a commotion and then left. Even the police did not come to investigate. They were afraid of interfering for fear of being involved themselves in the rido that caused the mans death. Believe it or not, just admiring a lady for having a sexy body would summon their guns to fire at you. Here, their pride comes first, and not some legal laws or officials could instruct them which is right and wrong. But do not get me wrong. Despite this, the other good traits and traditions of Maranaos I am certainly proud of. We are unique in our own way. This only means we have laid a strong foundation for our future generation the Maranaos cannot easily be stepped unto. Besides, the guns are only fired when we feel like we are not respected and are oppressed or harassed. And the end result: a unified city with people looking after one another, and sharing the blessings of Allah. As the Prophet Mohammad SAW said: All men are equal before the eyes of Allah. No rich, no poor. This we show in our community. Even the poor ones have the right to be heard. What is superb is the love we show for our Muslim brothers and sisters. We offer help to those who needs it, even those who are not of our blood, exchanging of ulam during meal times this I encounter everyday in my Lolas house, and the assurance that a fellow Maranao will let you borrow money even if you have just been acquainted for a few weeks. In Marawi, you will never be lost. The house of others is open for everyone to stay, and everyone knows everyone. Even the blind beggar on the side of the mosque, his life history everyone is aware of. The fenced mansion on the corner, closed yet their life is an open book. The lady on the bakery is sick again, so everyone pays a visit and prays for her health. The girl with the red car is getting married, her house flocked with well-wishers and advises to offer for the next big leap she is about to make. A kandori party is being held and visitors come in to watch the kulintangan, and mouthful bites of the exquisite cuisines such as dodol, kuning, manok a lalawagan, etc. I know others speak of my hometown as hazardous and unsafe, but Ive never walked in a place alone in the streets before without any fear attached. In other countries Ive been to, I could not do such thing. Maybe because I am from Marawi, I belong here so I feel free and unharmed all the time. .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102 , .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102 .postImageUrl , .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102 , .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102:hover , .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102:visited , .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102:active { border:0!important; } .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102:active , .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102 .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2a79bdb750ea165f1de3fd3402146102:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The adjective melodramatic EssayFrom waking up in the morning till hitting the bed at night, I am assured by my instincts that my day will be okay and no harm will strike upon me. Elders occasionally give us advices, especially the experts of our religion imams. Everywhere you go, youll feel like they are looking after you. Youll feel like you are loved. In my hometown, youll seldom hear fights nor hatred being expressed, wild teenagers at night nor loud parties. In short, my place is quiet, so quiet that when the clock strikes 6pm, no one is out in the streets. Everyone is in their homes, enjoying a great bonding with their families. Never could you hear youngsters running away nor families unstable. Even a man with 2 or more wives is still able to keep his family happy and intact. Seldom have I encountered an unstable family with dozens of problems to endure; instead, theyre always enthusiastic, blissful, and full of energy. I have proved these people are not rebels with firearms blatantly displayed, but rebels of God to spread His words and to live according to His teachings; and rebels for others to pull them off when they are dangling off a cliff, to look after them, and to guide them in the right path. I writhe in pain when I hear Muslims being stamped with the word terrorist on it. Ive known Muslims, Maranaos at least, my entire life and I strongly disagree with such. My people have no fault of having born to live a life as simple and conservative as they have been. Their beliefs and principles they want to inculcate in others minds the peace, tranquility, and love for humankind Islam has to offer. Yes, we are rebels. Rebels we are proud to be.

The Possible Careers For An ENFP Personality Type Essay Example

The Possible Careers For An ENFP Personality Type Paper Carl Jung, one of the most renowned psychiatrists in history and founder of analytical psychology, introduced the personality typology. According to Dr. C. George Boeree’s (2006) brief biography of Carl Jung, â€Å"Jung developed a personality typology that has become so popular that some people dont realize he did anything else. It begins with the distinction between introversion and extroversion† (n.p.). Boeree (2006) also discussed in his article the four functions that Jung believed are people’s preferences in dealing with the inner and outer world. These are sensing, thinking, intuiting, and feeling. These functions were developed later on by Katherine Briggs and Isabel Myers. In the book of Esther Cameron and Mike Green (2004), the authors described the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) as follows: The most effective tool for identifying personality type is the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). This is a personality inventory developed by Katherine Briggs and her daughter Isabel Myers. The MBTI is based on the work of the Swiss analytical psychologist Carl Jung. The MBTI identifies eight different personality ‘preferences’ that we all use at different time—but each individual will have a preference for one particular combination over the others (pp. 43–44). These are the 16 personality types as enumerated by Myers and Briggs: ENFP, INFP, ENFJ, INFJ, ESTJ, ISTJ, ESFJ, ISFJ, ENTP, INTP, ENTJ, INTJ, ESTP, ISTP, ESFP, and ISFP (cited in Cameron Green, 2004). Each letter stands for the eight different personality ‘preferences’ which are: E-Extraverted I-Introverted, N-iNtuitive, S-Sensing, F-Feeling, T-Thinking, P-Perceiving and J-Judging (Cameron Green, 2004). As for my Jungian self-assessment result, I turned out to have an ENFP personality type. It stands for Extraverted iNtuitive Feeling Perceiving. According to Joe Butt’s (2005) functional analysis of an ENFP’s personality type, We will write a custom essay sample on The Possible Careers For An ENFP Personality Type specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on The Possible Careers For An ENFP Personality Type specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on The Possible Careers For An ENFP Personality Type specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer The physical world, both geos and kosmos, is the ENFPs primary source of information. Rather than sensing things as they are, dominant intuition is sensitive to things as they might be. These extraverted intuitives are most adept with patterns and connections. Their natural inclination is toward relationships, especially among people or living things (n.p.). Butt (2005) also pointed out one colleague of his as someone with, â€Å"such tremendous interpersonal skills that she put her interviewers at ease during her own job interview. She had the ability to make strangers feel like old friends† (n.p.). This description actually earned a nod in terms of relating it to how I view myself. I like having people around me, and likewise, I also enjoy being around people. I enjoy communicating with them and building friendships. This is absolutely one of the primary reasons why I initially intend to pursue a master’s degree in business administration (MBA). I know that having the skills naturally would not be enough to be successful in something that I am comfortable in doing. To better provide a visual of my type of personality, here are some common ENFP descriptions from The Sixteen Personality Types by Linda Berens and Dario Nardi (1999): Theme is inspiration, both of themselves and others. Talents lie in grasping profound significance, revealing truths, and motivating others. Very perceptive of others’ hidden motives and purposes. Interested in everything about individuals and their stories as long as they are genuine. Contagious enthusiasm for â€Å"causes† that further good and develop latent potential and the same zeal for disclosing dishonesty and inauthencity. Frequently moved to enthusiastically communicate their â€Å"message† (p. 40). These personal findings definitely validate the reasons for my life and career decisions. I am indeed a very sociable person, and I tend to find more consolation by being focused on the outer world. This is the reason why I would like to pursue my studies so I can further my career in people-oriented type of jobs. Nevertheless, it is also possible that some of the descriptions might not match the way I see myself, or most probably, I am not aware yet that I possess them. Remembering the Johari Window, where the 2nd quadrant encloses the things that others know about me but I am unaware of, I realized that some of the descriptions on the ENFP personality can be considered as â€Å"things that I am not aware that I have.† It is also rather interesting that there are famous ENFP personalities according to Butt (2005), including â€Å"Meg Ryan (When Harry Met Sally), Robin Williams (Dead Poets Society, Mrs. Doubtfire), Sandra Bullock (Speed, While You Were Sleeping), Robert Downey (Heart and Souls), [and] Alicia Silverstone (Clueless)† (n.p.). These personalities have a common interest—acting. Acting specifically deals with entertaining people, which justifies the research conducted about ENFPs as being oriented with the outer world. As an ENFP type, it is safe to conclude that my interest would also be related to this field, which is unquestionably correct. The question is: What pushes me into pursuing an MBA? Honestly, it is because of the fulfillment that it brings me. I am technically new to the 16 personality types, so it is quite hard to pinpoint the motivation that I have for my decision which is also relative to my ENFP personality. Fortunately, I was able to come across one of the closest ENFP description to my personality. For ENFPs the dominant quality in their lives is their attention to the outer world of possibilities; they are excited by continuous involvement in anything new, whether it be new ideas, new people, or new activities. Though ENFPs thrive on what is possible and what is new, they also experience a deep concern for people as well. Thus, they are especially interested in possibilities for people. ENFPs are typically energetic, enthusiastic people who lead spontaneous and adaptable lives (Martin, 2008, n.p.). Apparently, one of the primary motivations here would be the involvement to something new. The enthusiasm of people with an ENFP personality guides them into taking new heights and turns along their life journey. New things excite and trigger their thirst for adventure. No matter where their personality leads them, whether interesting or not, they decide in accordance to their courage and hunger for quest. The 16 personality types are effective in discovering the reasons behind people’s decisions. Although it does not promise accuracy, it is with no question that knowing one’s type of personality is necessary in helping someone understand him- or herself more. nbsp; References Berens, L. 8 Great Podcasts for Writers and Book Authors

8 Great Podcasts for Writers and Book Authors 8 Great Podcasts for Writers and Book Authors 8 Great Podcasts for Writers and Book Authors By Ali Hale There is a lot of writing advice out there. Perhaps you’ve signed up to read lots of blogs by email, you’ve bought some great writing-related books, and you still feel like something’s missing. Or maybe your reading time is limited: you can’t very well scroll through blogs while you’re driving to work, for instance. That’s when podcasts come in. Whether you’re looking for encouragement or instruction, podcasts are a great way to get writing advice (often from award-winning and/or bestselling authors) in a way that fits around daily life. Maybe you could listen to a podcast on your commute, or while you’re working out at the gym, or while you’re doing the dishes or other household chores. (A lot of my own podcast listening happens while I tidy up my kids’ toys and craft activities!) If you prefer to read rather than listen, or if you’re looking to quickly glean specific bits of information, then look for podcasts that have a transcript, or at least detailed show notes. Here are eight great ones to try. They’re in no particular order: all of these offer excellent advice, and I’ve tried to indicate which might suit different types of writer. #1: Bestseller, from Reedsy Frequency:  roughly weekly while the season is running Average length: 20 minutes Transcript available: no Best for:  self-publishers, novelists This is a slick, professionally produced podcast from Reedsy, which describes itself as a â€Å"full ecosystem for authors and publishing professionals†: they offer classes, contests, and a marketplace where you can connect with editors, ghostwriters and other professionals. The short first season of their podcast covers the various stages of self-publishing a book, from understanding the writing process to going to market, and features Shaz Kahn talking about her experience of being a first time self-publisher. If you’re thinking of self-publishing, it’s definitely a good one to listen to. There aren’t too many episodes (six, at the time of writing) and they’re short, so you can easily listen to the whole thing. There’s no transcript, though, and only a few words for the show notes †¦ so if you’d rather read than listen, this might not be the best podcast for you. #2: The Creative Penn (Joanna Penn) Frequency: weekly Average length: 60 – 70 minutes Transcript available: yes (for the interview portion of the episode) Best for: fiction-writers; writers who are interested in self-publishing Most weeks, Joanna Penn interviews an author or expert on a particular topic; occasionally, she does a solo episode. Her focus is on self-publishing, but she covers a huge range of topics related to this, and has some episodes that focus on crafting fiction and others that look at topics that are more about the process of living a creative life (e.g. How Play Can Help You Overcome Anxiety And Become More Creative With Charlie Hoehn). Joanna starts each episode by talking about how her own writing and publishing is going, and then covers industry news for the past week, before going into the interview itself, which is the main part of the podcast. The first sections of the podcast aren’t transcribed, but the interview itself is. #3: I Should Be Writing (Mur Lafferty) Frequency: monthly Average length: 20 minutes Transcript available: yes Best for: fiction writers; beginners Way back in 2006, I’d just finished university and was working on a novel. I used to listen to Mur Lafferty’s fun, inspiring podcast, I Should Be Writing. At that point, she was podcasting her first novel, Playing for Keeps, a chapter at a time. Fast forward thirteen years, and Mur is now an award-winning podcaster who’s written a whole bunch of different things. She also has her own Wikipedia page: something that I think many writers aspire to! In her podcast, she talks honestly about her own writing and experiences. If you’re looking for a shot of writing inspiration or just want to virtually hang out with someone who â€Å"gets† what it’s like to be a writer, give it a try. If you’d prefer something more advanced, that deals with specific writing problems, then try Mur’s other podcast Ditch Diggers instead. #4: Helping Writers Become Authors (K.M. Weiland) Frequency: three times a month Average length: 15 – 20 minutes Transcript available: yes (the podcast is a read-aloud version of K.M.’s blog posts) Best for: fiction writers Author K.M. Weiland offers fantastic, detailed advice on the craft of writing fiction on her blog. Her podcast is part of the blog, and each episode has a short introduction then an audio version of a blog post (if you’d rather listen to a blog post than read it, you can find the audio link at the bottom). The posts/episodes cover broad topics about writing/creativity like 6 Lifestyle Changes You Can Make to Protect Creativity and specific ones like Tips for How to Choose the Right Sentences. If you like podcasts that are focused on giving focused, actionable advice, rather than ones that are more like hanging out with writers as they chat, then K.M.’s is a great option for you. Each episode covers a topic in-depth, but doesn’t last longer than 20 minutes. If you prefer to read rather than listen, then simply read the blog post versions of her podcast episodes instead of subscribing to the podcast itself. #5: The Portfolio Life (Jeff Goins) Frequency: weekly Average length: 30 – 40 minutes Transcript available: no Best for: writers looking for inspiration and encouragement Some episodes of this podcast involve Jeff interviewing an author or expert; others are Jeff sharing his own experience and expertise with the audience. The podcast mainly focuses on writing, though there’s also a broader look at creativity in some episodes – e.g. How to Use Time to Be Your Most Creative. Although there isn’t a transcript as such, the episodes have a blog post version too, that’s a shorter, more succinct version of the podcast – so if you prefer to read, stick with the blog posts. In both the podcasts and the posts, Jeff is always both encouraging and realistic about the creative process and life as a writer, and offers a mix of practical advice and reassuring words. #6: Writing Excuses (Multiple Hosts) Frequency: weekly Average length: 15 minutes Transcript available: yes, indexed here Best for: fiction writers This long-running podcast is hosted by several different writers and covers a wide range of writing topics, in short episodes because (according to their tagline) â€Å"fifteen minutes long, because you’re in a hurry, and we’re not that smart†. Sometimes, it’s a discussion on a particular topic between the hosts, and sometimes they have a guest to interview. It’s a very informal, chatty show and some episodes are more focused than others – but if you want something fun to listen to while you’re doing the dishes or folding the laundry, it’s a great choice. Some of the episodes are really specific (e.g. they have one on writing Characters Who Are Smarter Than You Are and they did several on space travel recently), so it’s well worth a dig through their very extensive archives to see if they have something that tackles the exact question you have about your novel-in-progress. #7: The Self Publishing Show (Mark Dawson and James Blatch) Frequency: weekly Average length: 50 minutes Transcript available: yes Best for: self-publishers On this podcast, Mark Dawson – a highly experienced and successful self-publishing novelist – and James talk to various authors and experts about different aspects of self-publishing and marketing. Each episode has both video and audio, and they’re nicely produced: while Mark and James are chatty and friendly, the focus is always on drawing out lots of detailed information from interviewees. The episodes cover a range of different topics, from the nuts and bolts of things like cover design and using Facebook live, to more big-picture ones like The Entrepreneur Mindset. Each episode includes show notes with â€Å"this week’s highlights†, so you can take a look at a few in the archive and decide which ones would be useful to listen to. There are occasional â€Å"Masterclass† episodes, where Mark (interviewed by James) talks about a particular topic in detail: Masterclass: Amazon Ads – What’s Working Right Now is a good example. #8: Writers on Writing (Barbara DeMarco-Barrett) Frequency: weekly Average length: 55 60 minutes Transcript available: no Best for: fiction writers focused on their craft This podcast is a radio show that offers a more literary take on writing, talking to authors about their books, process and craft (rather than covering topics like self-publishing and entreprenurship). They have some impressively big name authors like Liane Moriarty appearing as guests on the show – you can find a list of upcoming guests here. As well as talking to authors, they invite on editors and literary agents: for instance, they had LA agent Betsy Amster on in December. So if you’re looking for help with cover letters or insights into the publishing world, this could be a great podcast for you. There aren’t any transcripts, and the show notes are very brief, but do have a dig through the archives as the show has some consistently interesting, detailed episodes – think of them a bit like attending a talk at a writing festival or conference. Podcasts can be an easy way to learn about specific topics or to virtually hang out with some great writers while you’re getting on with the more mundane tasks in life.
